Celtics Eyeing Giannis Antetokounmpo Trade Amid Jayson Tatum Concerns
In a recent discussion, Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix expressed skepticism regarding the Boston Celtics pursuing a trade for Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo this summer. With Tatum currently recovering from Achilles surgery, his health remains a significant uncertainty. Mannix emphasized that without clarity on Tatum’s status, trading for Antetokounmpo would be ill-advised, given the latter’s two fully-guaranteed years left on his contract.
Brian Windhorst of ESPN pointed out that Antetokounmpo might consider the Celtics and Knicks as potential fits, especially given the competitive nature of the Western Conference. However, a trade package for the 30-year-old would demand substantial assets and may not lead to immediate championship contention for Boston, particularly if Tatum misses significant playing time.
ESPN’s Bobby Marks highlighted that current luxury tax rules severely limit the Celtics’ ability to make such trades. The only viable option would involve trading Tatum for Antetokounmpo, which seems unlikely due to Tatum’s value and health status.
As the offseason progresses, the Celtics face tough decisions while managing their roster under financial constraints.
