Headline: Former Police Scandal Teen Sentenced to Prison in Fatal Shooting Case
Springfield, MA – Evdyele Oniel Pabon Flores, now 25, has been sentenced to 8-11 years in prison for his role in a fatal shooting that occurred on December 7, 2022, in Holyoke. Pabon Flores pleaded guilty to multiple charges including manslaughter and assault with a firearm, having originally been charged with murder for allegedly shooting Luis Ramos, a 49-year-old man, multiple times.
The incident took place at the intersection of Pine and Sargeant streets, where police found two crashed vehicles. Nearby, they discovered Ramos lying wounded in a backyard; he later died from his injuries. Pabon Flores, who was a passenger in one of the vehicles, turned himself in at the Holyoke District Court in April 2023 and was subsequently detained.
This sentence comes nearly a decade after Pabon Flores was involved in a high-profile incident related to Springfield narcotics detective Gregg A. Bigda. In 2016, videos surfaced showing Bigda verbally assaulting Pabon Flores and two other teens during a controversial arrest after a police vehicle was stolen. Testimonies indicated that Bigda employed excessive force against the boys, resulting in charges against him, though he was acquitted of criminal wrongdoing in 2021.
As law enforcement continues to face scrutiny over police conduct, Pabon Flores’ recent sentencing highlights ongoing issues within the criminal justice system, particularly concerning youth and community relations. The Hampden District Attorney’s Office confirmed Pabon Flores’ sentencing but did not comment on his previous involvement with the Bigda case. Meanwhile, Bigda’s battle for reinstatement of his police certification remains ongoing after being denied by the Massachusetts Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission last year.
The case has left a lasting impact on community trust towards police, as highlighted by numerous local advocates.
