Track Stars Shine at Meet of Champions Amid Sweltering Heat
FITCHBURG – The opening day of the Meet of Champions at Fitchburg State University showcased elite athletes, dramatic victories, and personal records, all in sweltering heat. Westford Academy senior Ryan Kyle set a new state record of 51.72 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles, claiming the state champion title just a day before high school graduation. "The heat didn’t bother me,” Kyle said. “I blocked that out."
Among the highlights, Apponequet Regional’s Thomas Smith triumphed in the boys pentathlon 100 hurdles, while Billerica Memorial’s Nyrah Joseph excelled in the girls pentathlon hurdles and high jump. Dracut’s Zoe Clark led the girls discus throw, and Peabody’s Areno Saint-Victor topped the boys competition with a throw of 154 feet.
Additional notable performances included North Reading’s Giuliana Ligor, who won the 400 hurdles, and Brighton’s Delmace Joseph Mayo, who swept the wheelchair events. Brookline’s Altamo Aschkenasy, celebrating right after his prom, won the 800 meters with an impressive time of 1:51.62.
Overall, the Meet of Champions was a stunning display of talent, determination, and resilience from some of the state’s best athletes.
