Former Boston Police Officer Sentenced for Overtime Fraud
BOSTON, MA – A former Boston police officer, Craig Smalls, 58, was sentenced to two years of probation on Thursday stemming from an overtime fraud investigation that implicated over a dozen officers within the department’s evidence warehouse. This case has drawn attention for highlighting issues of misconduct within law enforcement.
Smalls, a Roxbury resident, was also ordered to pay a fine of $16,000 and restitution amounting to $16,252 for the fraudulent activities he engaged in between January 2015 and September 2016. He pleaded guilty in 2021 to conspiracy to commit theft concerning federal programs and embezzlement.
According to the Massachusetts U.S. Attorney’s office, Smalls submitted false overtime slips, claiming hours he never worked. For instance, during shifts designated for disposing of outdated evidence, he would routinely leave at least two hours early, effectively defrauding the department. In another instance, while purportedly collecting old prescription drugs from various districts, Smalls claimed to have worked full eight-hour shifts, but he was only present for three to four hours.
The investigation has led to charges against 15 Boston police officers, marking a significant breach of trust within the department. Smalls is the third officer to receive sentencing as part of this ongoing investigation.
The case underscores the importance of accountability and integrity within law enforcement agencies. As the investigation continues, it remains a stark reminder of the repercussions of unethical behavior in public service.
