Five members of the Proud Boys, a right-wing extremist group involved in the January 6 insurrection, are suing the U.S. government for over $100 million. They claim the Justice Department and FBI violated their constitutional rights during their arrests and subsequent jailing following their participation in the Capitol storming aimed at overturning the 2020 presidential election results. The lawsuit, filed on June 6 in a Florida federal court, includes members Henry “Enrique” Tarrio, Zachary Rehl, Ethan Nordean, Joseph Biggs, and Dominic Pezzola. They allege mistreatment, including harsh raids and solitary confinement.
In 2023, a jury found several of these leaders guilty of seditious conspiracy, leading to lengthy prison sentences ranging from 15 to 22 years. Following his return to office in 2025, former President Trump issued clemency to many individuals involved in the January 6 events. During interviews with USA TODAY, the plaintiffs expressed unwavering support for their actions that day, with some stating they would repeat them if given the chance. Rehl even suggested aspirations for public office, asserting his capability to represent his community effectively.
The Proud Boys’ actions and their legal challenges reflect ongoing tensions surrounding the 2020 election aftermath.
