Supreme Court Appeal: Trump Admin Seeks to Halt Education Department Layoff Reinstatement
The Trump administration has requested the Supreme Court to stay a federal ruling that reinstated nearly 1,400 Education Department employees dismissed during mass layoffs. This move is part of President Trump’s broader strategy to dismantle the Department of Education, which he views as an obstacle to improving national academic performance.
Last month, U.S. District Judge Myong Joun issued a preliminary injunction reversing the layoffs, declaring that such actions could "cripple the department" and hinder its ability to fulfill essential responsibilities mandated by Congress, including enforcing civil rights laws and supporting special education. The judge’s order has effectively stalled the administration’s plan to reduce the department’s size and scope.
In its emergency appeal, the Justice Department argued that Judge Joun overstepped his authority, contending that his ruling imposed his policy preferences over those of the Trump administration. Solicitor General D. John Sauer emphasized that the layoffs were intended to streamline the department and transfer certain functions to state governments, aligning with Trump’s vision of reducing federal involvement in education.
Two lawsuits underlie the critical legal battle: one from Massachusetts school districts and education groups, and another from a coalition of 21 Democratic attorneys general. Both claim the layoffs infringe legislative mandates and threaten educational support systems nationwide.
As the administration pushes forward, critics are raising concerns regarding a proposed 15% budget cut to the Education Department, including significant reductions in K-12 funding. President Trump continues to advocate for returning educational authority to the states, even as many argue that local jurisdictions already have substantial control over K-12 education.
