Heavy Rain and Flooding Alert Issued for Massachusetts
The National Weather Service has issued an urgent alert for Norfolk, Suffolk, Bristol, and Plymouth counties, predicting heavy rain and flooding until 6:30 p.m. on Saturday. A line of thunderstorms stretching from eastern Connecticut to northern Rhode Island and eastern Massachusetts is expected to bring rainfall rates of 1-2 inches per hour, resulting in street flooding.
Residents are advised to prioritize safety by avoiding swift water near culverts and drainage ditches. Drivers should increase following distances from the standard two seconds to four, reduce speeds gradually, and choose middle lanes to minimize hydroplaning risks. Enhanced visibility is crucial—drivers should turn on headlights and be mindful of vehicles obscured by rain-smeared windows.
The first 30 minutes of rainfall are particularly treacherous, making roads slippery due to the mix of water and oil. Motorists should also maintain a safe distance from large vehicles to avoid reduced visibility from tire spray. If conditions deteriorate, it’s recommended to pull over safely and wait until it’s safe to continue.
Staying informed about weather alerts and adhering to safety tips can significantly reduce risks during this severe weather event.
