Patriots OTA Highlights: Players to Watch
The New England Patriots concluded their organized team activities (OTAs) on June 5, offering fans and media a glimpse of the evolving roster. This year’s OTAs showcased a blend of rookies and experienced players engaging in drills, laying the groundwork for future roster decisions that will culminate in the final 53-man lineup by August.
Stefon Diggs, just eight months post-ACL tear, has turned heads with his explosive agility, appearing faster than fellow wide receiver Kayshon Boutte during drills. Despite recent controversy stemming from a viral video, the Patriots’ coaching staff remains committed to Diggs, eyeing him as a primary weapon for rookie quarterback Drake Maye.
Rookie Efton Chism also impressed, establishing himself as a viable candidate for the roster. His strong performances in practice have positioned him favorably, particularly as a slot receiver behind DeMario Douglas. Boston Sports Journal’s Greg Bedard emphasized that it would be hard to exclude Chism from the final roster.
On the offensive line, Cole Strange, a former first-round pick, is vying for a starting role, likely at left guard. He has shown promise, especially under coach Mike Vrabel’s guidance, indicating a potential turnaround after injury woes.
Rookie Craig Woodson, despite being deemed a reach during the draft, has displayed significant potential in practices and may challenge for a starting safety position, especially after lackluster seasons from veterans Kyle Dugger and Jabrill Peppers.
Lastly, linebacker Robert Spillane is making a strong case for his leadership on defense, earning praise from coaches for his on-field intelligence and presence. His past performance, including 158 tackles last season, suggests he could be pivotal in reshaping the Patriots’ defense.
