Washington Mystics Dominate Connecticut Sun in 104-67 Victory
WASHINGTON (AP) — In a commanding performance at home, the Washington Mystics secured a 104-67 victory over the Connecticut Sun on Sunday, with Brittney Sykes leading the charge by scoring 28 points and converting 14 of 15 free throws. Rookie standout Kiki Iriafen and Sonia Citron contributed significantly, adding 12 and 11 points, respectively, while Sug Sutton added 10 points to the Mystics’ collective effort.
The Mystics improved their record to 4-6, showcasing a well-balanced offensive that shot 57% from the field, hitting 36 of 63 attempts, and dishing out 24 assists. They also excelled at the free-throw line, making 26 of 37 attempts, marking their first 100-point game since 2023. In contrast, the Sun managed a shooting percentage of only 39% (26 of 66) and converted 8 of 9 free throws.
In addition to Sykes, Shakira Austin and Aaliyah Edwards made key contributions off the bench, scoring 14 and 13 points, respectively. The Mystics dominated the glass with a staggering 42-22 rebounding advantage, and outscored the Sun 56-24 in the paint.
For Connecticut (2-7), Tina Charles led with 17 points, while Marina Mabrey and reserve Jacy Sheldon each added 15. Notably, Haley Peters, at 32 years old, made her first career start for the Sun, becoming the oldest player to do so since Mario Jones in 2010.
After breaking away from an early tie, the Mystics enjoyed a significant scoring streak and established a comfortable lead, extending to a decisive 50-36 at halftime. Washington maintained their momentum with an 11-2 run at the start of the second half, culminating in a dominant 16-2 closing run that sealed the win.
