U.S. Men’s National Team Falls to Türkiye in Friendly as Pochettino Prepares for Crucial June
EAST HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT – The U.S. Men’s National Soccer Team kicked off an important month under coach Mauricio Pochettino with a 2-1 loss to Türkiye in a friendly match on Saturday. This encounter marks the beginning of five scheduled games in June, pivotal as the team gears up for the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup and the eagerly anticipated 2026 World Cup.
The match began on a high note for the U.S., with Jack McGlynn scoring a stunning goal just 30 seconds in. However, the momentum shifted dramatically as Türkiye equalized shortly after, with a deflected shot from Johnny Cardoso in the 24th minute. Moments later, Kerem Aktürkoğlu capitalized on a defensive error to give Türkiye a 2-1 lead.
Despite controlling 59% of possession and outshooting the visitors 13-11, the U.S. struggled to convert their chances. Pochettino expressed satisfaction with the team’s effort, stating, “We showed great energy, great mentality,” but acknowledged the emotional setback after conceding the first goal created chaos in their gameplay.
The second half saw the U.S. regroup, with substitute Tyler Adams contributing significantly to their attacking efforts. Though Patrick Agyemang had several opportunities, he couldn’t find the back of the net, leading to disappointment for the home side.
Looking ahead, the U.S. will host Switzerland in another friendly on June 10, before beginning Gold Cup group play against Trinidad and Tobago on June 15. Pochettino remains optimistic, emphasizing the importance of these matches for team preparation. “We want to win and compete well in the Gold Cup. It’s going to be tough, but we believe in our roster and their potential,” he stated.
