Red Sox Reliever Justin Slaten’s Return Uncertain Due to Shoulder Inflammation
BOSTON — The Boston Red Sox face a challenging setback as reliever Justin Slaten, originally anticipated to make a quick return from the injured list, remains sidelined with right shoulder inflammation. Nearly two weeks after his placement on the IL, Slaten has not progressed significantly and continues to be shut down from throwing.
Manager Alex Cora acknowledged the situation during a recent press conference, noting, “It’s slower than we expected. He hasn’t reacted to treatment the way we anticipated.” Slaten, who was expected to contribute in high-leverage situations and occasionally step in for closer Aroldis Chapman, has left a noticeable gap in the bullpen. Cora lamented the loss, recalling the team’s struggles last year when both Slaten and pitcher Chris Martin were injured.
In the absence of Slaten, the Red Sox bullpen has shown commendable resilience, but Cora admitted some players are feeling the strain of extra usage. “It’s a big loss,” he emphasized, expressing hope that Slaten will be able to return soon, although he noted that the timeline remains uncertain.
In addition to Slaten’s injury, the Red Sox provided updates on other players. Tanner Houck, dealing with a flexor pronator strain, threw a bullpen session on Tuesday, with another session expected this weekend. Nick Burdi, recovering from a foot contusion, also participated in a bullpen session and may begin a rehab assignment during the team’s upcoming West Coast trip. Meanwhile, Wilyer Abreu, who has a left oblique strain, is close to resuming batting practice, while Liam Hendriks, suffering from right hip inflammation, has yet to resume throwing, and no clear timeline for his return has been established.
As the team navigates these challenges, their resilience will be tested in the coming weeks.
