Alex Cora’s Honest Take on Controversial Call in Red Sox Defeat

Red Sox Battle, but Fall to Rays in 11-Inning Thriller

By Hayden Bird | June 10, 2025

In a dramatic showdown at Fenway Park, the Boston Red Sox faced off against the Tampa Bay Rays, ultimately losing 10-8 after 11 intense innings. The game, marked by several rallies from the Red Sox, was overshadowed by a contentious moment in the bottom of the 11th inning.

With the Red Sox trailing by two runs and a full count on Romy Gonzalez, a pitch deemed low by NESN’s broadcast was called a strike by home plate umpire Junior Valentine. Red Sox manager Alex Cora quickly emerged from the dugout to contest the call and was promptly ejected. Following the game, Cora expressed frustration, asserting, “It was a ball. That pitch was down,” underscoring his disappointment in the official’s judgment.

On a more positive note, the night also marked the Major League Baseball debut of top prospect Roman Anthony. The 21-year-old outfielder, batting fifth, concluded his first game hitless but walked and contributed an RBI groundout in the ninth inning. Cora praised Anthony’s poise, noting, “He was able to slow it down… He didn’t try to do too much. It was a good first day.”

Despite the loss, the Red Sox managed to rally multiple times, showcasing resilience against the Rays. The teams will clash again tonight at 7:10 PM at Fenway, as Boston looks to rebound from this narrow defeat.

As for trivia enthusiasts, the most ejected MLB manager of all time is Bobby Cox, who won two World Series titles during his Hall of Fame career, including one as a manager in 1995.

Stay tuned for updates as the Red Sox continue their pursuit of a winning season.
