Local Conservationist Dies in Alaska Helicopter Crash
Tragedy struck the conservation community as Shiloh Schulte, a senior shorebird scientist at the Manomet Conservation Sciences center in Plymouth, was killed in a helicopter crash in Alaska last week. Schulte, who hailed from Kennebunk, Maine, was conducting vital conservation work at the time of the accident.
The Robinson R-66 helicopter went down near Kaparuk, approximately 25 to 30 miles southwest of Deadhorse, Alaska, on June 4, confirmed the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). Local officials reported multiple fatalities, including the pilot and Schulte. NTSB investigators arrived on site on June 6, with a preliminary report expected within a month.
Schulte’s work focused on the recovery of shorebirds like the American oystercatcher. Remembered for his dedication, the Manomet Center shared a heartfelt tribute, emphasizing his commitment to preserving the natural world. A GoFundMe campaign has been established to support his family, including his wife and two daughters, alongside efforts in conservation.
Schulte’s passion extended beyond science; he was an avid birder, a competitive distance runner, and held a second-degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do. A memorial page has been set up for those wishing to honor his legacy.
