Sydney Sweeney Transforms into Boxing Legend Christy Martin for Upcoming Biopic
Sydney Sweeney is stepping into the ring as Christy Martin, the pioneering female boxer, in a biopic directed by David Michôd. The 27-year-old actress shared insights into her dramatic transformation for the role in a recent W Magazine cover story, revealing a rigorous training regimen that included gaining over 30 pounds.
Sweeney devoted three and a half months to training, which involved intense weight training and kickboxing. “I started eating,” she recalled, detailing her daily routine of an hour of morning weight training, followed by two hours of kickboxing, and another hour of weight training at night. The results of her dedication were significant; her body transformed dramatically, requiring a shift from her usual size 23 jeans to a size 27.
Despite the physical challenges, Sweeney embraced her new strength and body, exclaiming, “It was amazing: I was so strong, like crazy strong.” During filming in Charlotte, North Carolina, Sweeney sported a short, curly brown wig, embodying the spirit of the WBC super welterweight champion.
Director David Michôd remarked on the striking contrast between Sweeney’s boxing persona and her typical glamorous look, reflecting on her transformation as both shocking and impressive. The film chronicles Martin’s groundbreaking career in women’s boxing, including her historic 1996 fight against Deirdre Gogarty, which brought significant attention to the sport.
Following a tumultuous personal life, including a near-fatal attack by her manager-turned-husband, Martin is eager for audiences to see Sweeney’s portrayal. “I think she is young, hot, talented,” Martin expressed, emphasizing the film’s potential to raise awareness about domestic violence. Sweeney is equally inspired, stating she is excited to portray Martin’s compelling journey.
