Roman Anthony Shines in Red Sox Victory Over Rays
BOSTON (AP) — In a memorable performance, Roman Anthony, the Boston Red Sox’s top prospect, marked his first major league hit with a two-run double and shone defensively, leading his team to a 3-1 victory against the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday night.
After a challenging debut where he went hitless and committed an error, Anthony’s standout performance came with his family in attendance. In the first inning, he drove in Rafael Devers and Carlos Narváez, giving the Red Sox an early 2-0 lead. The 21-year-old outfielder also delighted fans with a stellar sliding catch in the sixth inning, showcasing his defensive prowess.
Trevor Story also made a significant contribution, recording two hits, including a solo homer that soared over the iconic Green Monster and onto Lansdowne Street. He extended his streak to four consecutive multi-hit games, a much-needed boost to his batting average after a recent slump.
On the mound, Lucas Giolito picked up his first win in five starts, limiting the Rays to just one unearned run amid three hits and three walks, while striking out four over six innings. Despite an errant pickoff throw that contributed to the lone run, Giolito displayed exceptional control. Greg Weissert closed the game, earning his first major league save.
Tampa Bay’s Ryan Pepio struggled against the Red Sox lineup, yielding three runs over 5 2/3 innings despite striking out nine batters. The matchup saw Boston reclaim solid footing after a tough loss the night before.
Looking ahead, the Red Sox will face Tampa’s Zack Littell in the series finale, as they aim to build on this hard-fought victory that showcased their young talent and experienced hitters alike.
