Press Release: Immigration Raids Spark Outcry in Los Angeles

Los Angeles – A series of federal immigration raids targeting garment workers in LA’s fashion district has led to over 100 detentions, igniting significant protests across the region. Among those detained is Jacob Vasquez, a newly arrived immigrant from Mexico and the sole provider for his family. His brother Gabriel expressed concern for his welfare, stating, “We don’t know where he is.”
The raids have prompted public outcry, particularly as many affected individuals lack criminal histories and are reportedly denied their due process rights. Mayor Karen Bass condemned the actions, emphasizing that they target a vulnerable immigrant population, which constitutes about 10% of LA County’s residents. The fear has spread among immigrant communities, with legal residents also feeling threatened.
As protests escalated, demonstrators blocked major thoroughfares and clashed with law enforcement. Local advocates highlight the negative impact of these operations on businesses, as the climate of fear is deterring workers. Notably, a judge authorized the raids based on claims that Ambiance Apparel, the target of the operation, was using falsified documents, a claim the company vigorously denies.
The ongoing situation raises concerns about the broader implications for immigrants and businesses across Southern California.
