Red Sox Rookie Hits Two Homers, Walker Buehler Leads Team to 4-3 Victory Over Rays

Red Sox Rookie Marcelo Mayer Shines with Two Home Runs in Exciting Win Over Rays

BOSTON — Red Sox rookie Marcelo Mayer showcased his talent Wednesday night, hitting two home runs in a thrilling 4-3 victory against the Tampa Bay Rays at Fenway Park. Drafted No. 4 overall in the 2021 MLB Draft, Mayer’s performance delighted fans as he launched both homers—a remarkable feat for the 22-year-old—into right field, just past Pesky’s Pole.

Mayer’s first blast was a 418-foot shot that ignited the crowd, while his second was a 410-foot follow-up, helping the Red Sox regain the lead at 3-1. This performance marked him as the youngest Boston player to achieve a multi-homer game since Rafael Devers in 2018 and placed him among an elite group of just ten players to do so within their first 15 games.

Starting pitcher Walker Buehler also shone in his best outing since returning from the injured list, allowing three runs over seven innings. Despite some tense moments, including a bases-loaded situation in the eighth, the Red Sox secured their seventh one-run win of the season, bolstered by rookie catcher Carlos Narvaez’s crucial defensive plays. The Red Sox continue to build momentum in a competitive season.
