Red Sox Trade for High-Velocity Reliever from Twins

Red Sox Strengthen Bullpen with Trade for Jorge Alcalá

June 12, 2025 – In a strategic move to enhance their struggling bullpen, the Boston Red Sox have acquired right-handed relief pitcher Jorge Alcalá from the Minnesota Twins. The trade, announced late Wednesday, involved sending prospect Andy Lugo to Minnesota.

Alcalá, 29, has faced challenges this season, posting an 8.88 ERA over 24.1 innings. However, he had a successful 2024 season, contributing with a 3.24 ERA and striking out 58 batters in 54 appearances. His fastball, consistently clocking in at 96.9 mph, places him in the 88th percentile among MLB pitchers.

The Red Sox’s bullpen, already impacted by injuries to Justin Slaten and Liam Hendriks, will now integrate Alcalá alongside relievers like Zack Kelly and Luis Guerrero. With Alcalá’s addition, Boston hopes to bolster its middle-relief options, crucial as they navigate the rest of the season.

Prospect Andy Lugo, who was traded, had been performing adequately at High-A Greenville, batting .265 with four homers and a .758 OPS across 44 games.

As the Red Sox aim for a competitive edge, this trade marks a significant step in their ongoing efforts to reinforce their pitching depth.
