Agawam Claims Division 2 Volleyball Title in Thrilling 3-1 Victory Over Wayland
SHREWSBURY – Agawam’s boys volleyball team clinched the Div. 2 state championship with a 3-1 win over Wayland, thanks to a standout performance from setter David Dzhenzherukha. In a rematch of last year’s state semifinals, where Agawam faced a reverse sweep by Wayland, Dzhenzherukha delivered 46 assists and four kills, demonstrating his leadership throughout the match.
The top-seeded Brownies (24-1) started strong but faced a spirited challenge from No. 3 Wayland (16-9), particularly from junior Finn Bell, who recorded 25 kills. After dropping the second set 25-23, Agawam regrouped, showcasing remarkable teamwork and defensive prowess. Junior Tim Karcha dominated with 16 kills, while senior Joe Culhane contributed 15 to seal the decisive fourth set at 25-16.
Head coach Kevin Pender highlighted the team’s depth and balance as they sought to prove their mettle without reliance on individual stars. “This was a team win,” he emphasized. Following the match, Wayland’s coach Phil George reflected on his team’s progress, proud of their performance and the program’s growth. With this victory, Agawam not only avenged last year’s loss but also affirmed their dominance in the state.
