President Donald Trump has introduced a “Golden Dome” missile defense initiative, inspired by Israel’s Iron Dome, with plans for completion by the end of his term. Concurrently, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced a “targeted military operation” against Iran, emphasizing that Iran is close to developing nuclear weapons due to its recent advancements in uranium enrichment. Netanyahu asserted that if left unchecked, Iran could produce a nuclear weapon within months.
In a video address, he detailed that Israel’s military actions specifically targeted Iran’s enrichment facilities, key nuclear scientists, and its ballistic missile program. Netanyahu vowed to continue operations until the nuclear threat was eradicated, contradicting Trump’s earlier warnings about avoiding military strikes while diplomatic talks were still ongoing. A sixth round of negotiations was set to occur in Oman shortly after an Israeli attack, raising uncertainties about the future of these talks.
Netanyahu criticized Iran for allegedly buying time in negotiations, arguing that failure to act decisively could enable Iran to transfer nuclear capabilities to its regional allies, labeled as terrorist groups by the U.S. and other nations. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) recently reported that Iran had enriched uranium up to 60% purity, dangerously near the 90% threshold needed for weaponization. The IAEA also noted Iran’s noncompliance with nuclear nonproliferation obligations, which led to a significant resolution against Iran.
In his address, Netanyahu drew historical parallels to the Holocaust, stressing Israel’s determination to prevent any future nuclear threats. He appealed to global audiences, warning of the dangers posed by an increasingly capable Iran to both Europe and the United States.
