Karen Read Sought to Select Alternate Jurors Herself, Motion Reveals

Judge Denies Karen Read’s Bid to Select Alternate Jurors in Murder Trial

In a recent development regarding the high-profile murder trial of Karen Read, a judge has denied her defense team’s request to allow her to personally select alternate jurors. Charged with the 2022 murder of her boyfriend, John O’Keefe, Read’s attorneys filed a motion seeking more transparency in the juror selection process. They proposed that Read draw alternate juror balls from a drum to ensure neutrality and instill confidence in the fairness of the proceedings.

However, Judge Beverly J. Cannone swiftly dismissed the proposal with a simple "Denied." Retired state Superior Court Judge Jack Lu expressed skepticism about the defense’s suggestion, questioning its seriousness given the gravity of the case. "It undermines defense credibility," he stated, emphasizing that selecting jurors is a serious and regulated process.

The jury selection, which commenced on April 1, concluded with the seating of 18 jurors, including 12 for deliberations and 6 alternates. The alternates were selected using a traditional drum method, a practice endorsed by the state’s Supreme Judicial Court.

This ongoing story highlights the complexities and protocols involved in high-stakes criminal trials.
