Ananda Lewis’ Sister Shares the Former MTV VJ’s Final Wish

MTV Star Ananda Lewis Passes Away, Fulfilling Heartfelt Wish for Son’s Graduation

Former MTV VJ Ananda Lewis tragically passed away on June 11, 2023, at age 52, just hours after seeing her 14-year-old son, Langston, graduate from middle school. Lewis’ sister, Lakshmi Emory, shared the emotional story with Entertainment Tonight, revealing that Lewis’s final wish was to live long enough to witness her son’s milestone. "Her wish was to live to his graduation day,” Emory shared, noting that she accomplished this wish despite a prolonged battle with breast cancer.

Lewis, who welcomed Langston in 2011 with Will Smith’s brother, Harry Smith, fought courageously against the disease, initially diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer in 2018 before advancing to Stage 4. She had previously vowed to stay strong for her son, expressing in an Instagram video, “I have no intention on leaving him. I like being here.”

Emory announced Lewis’s passing via a poignant Facebook post, stating, "She’s free, and in His heavenly arms." The heartfelt tribute continued, highlighting their deep bond and the heartbreak of losing her sister. “My life will never be the same without her," she wrote.

Before her passing, Lewis shared her cancer journey in various platforms, emphasizing her desire for quality of life. In an essay for Essence, she voiced her views on the inevitability of death, saying, "We all go… These bodies are on loan." Lewis first gained fame on MTV in 1997 and later hosted her own talk show. Her legacy continues through her son’s growth and the love she left behind. Friends and family mourn the loss of a passionate advocate and loving mother who left an indelible mark on many lives.
