Tragic Shooting of Minnesota Lawmakers Sparks Outrage
BROOKLYN PARK, Minn. — A shocking act of violence unfolded early Saturday when a man impersonating a police officer fatally shot former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, at their Brooklyn Park residence. Another lawmaker, Senator John Hoffman, and his wife were injured in a separate attack in Champlin. Governor Tim Walz condemned the incidents as “targeted political violence,” asserting, “We must all…stand against all forms of political violence.”
Investigators discovered writings in a fake police vehicle linked to the shooter, which contained names of several lawmakers, prompting heightened security alerts across the state. State Patrol officials advised against attending planned "No Kings" protests due to possible risks, although there was no direct evidence of threats.
As law enforcement scours the area for the suspect, described as dangerous, community leaders and national figures have rallied in support of the victims and condemned the violence. President Donald Trump stated the FBI is involved in the investigation, stressing that such acts will not be tolerated. The shocking events highlight the growing concerns over safety for political figures amid a climate of escalating hostility in American politics.
