Rafael Devers: Red Sox DH Remains in the Spotlight
By Conor Roche | June 15, 2025
Rafael Devers, primarily a designated hitter this season, has sparked speculation about a potential return to infield play as he’s been spotted taking ground balls, including at shortstop. However, Red Sox manager Alex Cora remains firm that Devers will not play in the field in 2025, stating, "He’s my DH."
The uncertainty around Devers’ position intensified earlier this month when Triston Casas suffered a season-ending knee injury. Despite suggestions that Devers could step in at first base, he reiterated his unwillingness to change positions. This prompted Red Sox owner John Henry to meet with him during the team’s trip to Kansas City in an attempt to ease concerns.
On the other hand, Red Sox president and CEO Sam Kennedy hinted that Devers might return to the field if needed. Devers has a rich history as the team’s primary third baseman from 2018 to 2024. His performance as a designated hitter has been notable, with a batting average of .271, 14 home runs, and 57 RBIs. Impressively, he’s hitting .309 with a .981 OPS in recent weeks.
Cora clarified that Devers’ recent infield practices are more about conditioning, as the player dealt with a groin issue prior. While the Red Sox have managed to adapt to injuries in the corner infield positions—with players like Abraham Toro excelling—Cora emphasized that emergency planning is in place should Devers need to take the field.
As of now, Devers continues to excel at hitting, maintaining his focus as the team’s designated hitter amidst ongoing discussions about his fielding future.
