Incident at The Butcherie: A Disturbing Act of Vandalism in Brookline
BROOKLINE—The Butcherie, a Jewish grocery store located on Harvard Street, was vandalized early Sunday morning when a brick inscribed with “Free Palestine” was thrown through its window, which displayed a map depicting Israel. Brookline Police Chief Jennifer Paster denounced the act as “a disturbing act of hate and anti-Semitic vandalism,” emphasizing that it was not merely vandalism but a targeted message aimed at intimidating the Jewish community.
Surveillance footage shows two masked individuals executing the attack and fleeing the scene. The Butcherie responded via social media, asserting that the act represented not a political protest but a direct attack on their community, stating, “This was meant to threaten, to isolate, and to target us for who we are.”
Local leaders, including Brookline Select Board member David Pearlman and Governor Maura Healey, condemned the attack, marking it as a reminder of ongoing antisemitism. Additionally, the Anti-Defamation League characterized the incident as part of a broader trend of violence against Jewish communities, calling for public condemnation of such acts.
Authorities urge anyone with information to contact Brookline police as the investigation continues.
