Massachusetts GOP Chair Amy Carnevale Discusses Immigration and Local Issues Amid Trump Administration Policies

Amy Carnevale, chair of the Massachusetts Republican Party, recently shared insights on immigration and local concerns affecting state Republicans during an interview. Responding to questions about the potential deployment of National Guard troops to support ICE operations in cities facing protests, Carnevale emphasized that voters in the last election endorsed the enforcement of immigration laws. “While we have compassion for individuals seeking a better life, we must acknowledge the law they broke upon entry,” she stated, noting that most Americans desire enforcement tempered with compassion.

A recent Boston Globe/Suffolk University poll indicated that a significant majority of voters, 53%-41%, opposed the Trump administration’s deportation initiatives. This sentiment intensified regarding the case of Rumeysa Ozturk, a Tufts graduate student detained by ICE. The poll revealed 70% disapproval of her treatment, highlighting the community’s concerns over the federal actions.

Carnevale also differentiated between federal enforcement and the issues Massachusetts Republicans prioritize, such as tackling economic challenges and improving conditions in state shelters. She criticized the Healey administration’s proposed new taxes intended to cover rising expenses, warning that this could lead to an outmigration of businesses from the state.

Additionally, Carnevale mentioned ongoing debates within the party regarding leadership positions and the handling of migrant housing costs. As Massachusetts navigates these complex issues, Carnevale reassured that the Republican focus would remain on local matters, rather than solely on national immigration policy.
