ICE Chief Claims Gov. Healey and Mayor Wu Have Promoted Lawlessness

ICE Criticizes Massachusetts Leaders Over Immigration Enforcement Controversy

Federal immigration officials have sharply criticized Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey and Boston Mayor Michelle Wu following the release of Marcelo Gomes da Silva, an 18-year-old high school student detained by ICE. Acting Director Todd Lyons accused the officials of promoting "lawlessness" by prioritizing undocumented individuals, alleging that their actions compromise public safety. Gomes da Silva was arrested while on his way to volleyball practice, with ICE claiming it was searching for his father, a suspect in reckless driving incidents.

Governor Healey, defending Gomes da Silva, emphasized that he had no criminal record and questioned ICE’s focus on detaining someone who has been a positive community member. She rebuked the agency’s claims about conditions of detention and denied allegations made by Lyons regarding the quality of meals provided.

Congressmen Seth Moulton and Jake Auchincloss, who toured the Burlington facility where Gomes da Silva was held, expressed outrage over the conditions, describing them as "inhumane." Moulton criticized ICE’s treatment and called for more oversight of such facilities. Amidst this turmoil, Mayor Wu’s recent executive order demands transparency regarding ICE arrests in the city.
