Authorities have arrested Vance Luther Boelter, 57, who is accused of fatally shooting Minnesota lawmaker Melissa Hortman, her husband Mark, and wounding State Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette. The attacks, described by Governor Tim Walz as “politically motivated,” occurred on June 14, with Boelter allegedly posing as a law enforcement officer to gain access to the victims’ homes.
After a two-day manhunt—the largest in Minnesota’s history—Boelter was apprehended in Sibley County, roughly 50 miles from Minneapolis. He faces serious charges, including two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder, as outlined in a Hennepin County criminal complaint.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Yvette Hoffman provided updates on their recovery via social media, revealing she was shot eight times while Senator Hoffman sustained nine wounds. They expressed deep gratitude for the support they received, emphasizing their relief at being alive. However, they also conveyed profound grief over the deaths of the Hortmans, stating there is “never a place for this kind of political hate.” Senator Hoffman underwent several surgeries and was reported to be progressing toward recovery.
Melissa Hortman, a prominent Democrat serving her 11th term, was described as an accomplished attorney with degrees from the University of Minnesota, Boston University, and Harvard University. Similarly, John Hoffman, who has been in the House of Representatives since 2012, shared a background in business and education. Both lawmakers have made significant contributions to Minnesota’s political landscape. The tragic incidents have sparked discussions on political violence and public safety concerning elected officials.
