Press Release: Dominican Man Arraigned for 2022 Murder in Lawrence
LAWRENCE, MA – A 27-year-old Dominican national, Jose Sanchez, was arraigned on Monday in connection with the fatal shooting of 38-year-old Luis Mendez during a house party in Lawrence on April 25, 2022. Sanchez, who pleaded not guilty to the murder charge, appeared in Lawrence District Court, as confirmed by the Essex County District Attorney’s Office.
The incident occurred around 2 a.m. when Mendez was shot to death in the basement of a residence located at 210 Market St. Following the shooting, Sanchez fled the United States and evaded law enforcement for nearly two years. He was apprehended in the Dominican Republic in October 2024 and was extradited back to the U.S. on June 13.
During Monday’s arraignment, Sanchez was ordered to be held without bail. While the authorities have yet to disclose a motive for the incident, they have indicated that it was not a random act of violence.
The Essex County District Attorney’s Office is continuing its investigation, and no further details regarding the case have been released at this time. The legal proceedings against Sanchez are likely to unfold in the coming weeks as the community grapples with the impact of this violent event.
