Supreme Court to Review New Jersey Pregnancy Center’s Challenge Against State Subpoena
By LINDSAY WHITEHURST, Associated Press
The Supreme Court announced it will review a case involving a faith-based pregnancy center in New Jersey, First Choice Women’s Resource Centers, which is contesting a state investigation led by Attorney General Matthew Platkin. The inquiry revolves around allegations that the center misled individuals regarding its lack of abortion referrals. The state issued a subpoena in 2023 demanding donor information, advertisements, and details on medical personnel, which First Choice seeks to block.
The center describes itself as a pro-life organization aimed at dissuading women from choosing abortion. Although a federal judge dismissed their legal challenge on procedural grounds, the Supreme Court will now hear the appeal, citing First Choice’s concerns over potential infringements on its First Amendment rights.
Platkin’s office argues that the subpoena does not represent a significant legal controversy warranting Supreme Court intervention. However, the case becomes vital in a landscape where states are sharply divided on abortion access following the reversal of nationwide abortion rights. The Court is scheduled to hear arguments in the fall.
