Trump Directs ICE to Focus Deportations in Democratic Cities Amid Protests

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump has ordered federal immigration officials to escalate deportations in Democratic-run cities, following widespread protests against his administration’s immigration policies in major urban areas like Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York. Trump urged U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to implement what he termed the "largest Mass Deportation Program in History," emphasizing the need for increased detentions and deportations of undocumented immigrants.
This announcement coincides with a wave of intensified immigration enforcement and the announcement from White House advisor Stephen Miller that ICE aims to ramp up arrests to 3,000 daily, a significant increase from earlier figures. However, the administration has also paused arrests in certain industries, responding to concerns over the negative effects on sectors like agriculture and hospitality.
Protests erupted across the nation, particularly during the “no kings” demonstrations, which occurred as Trump attended a G7 summit. While many protests remained peaceful, tensions escalated in Los Angeles and Portland, where police utilized tear gas to manage crowds. Commenting on the protests, Trump attributed the peaceful outcome in Los Angeles to the presence of National Guard troops.
