Poll Shows Majority of Americans Reject Republican Tax Bill

A recent poll from the Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF) reveals that 64% of Americans view President Trump’s proposed tax bill unfavorably. This legislation, which passed the House in May and is being revised in the Senate, seeks to extend Trump’s 2017 tax cuts, introduce new tax cuts for overtime and tips, and funnel billions into immigration enforcement. It also proposes cuts to Medicaid and food stamps.

The survey indicates a stark partisan divide: 85% of Democrats and 71% of independents oppose the bill, while 61% of Republicans support it. Support among Republicans varies significantly, with 72% of those aligned with Trump’s “Make America Great Again” movement favoring the bill, compared to two-thirds of non-MAGA Republicans expressing disapproval.

The House version of the bill aims to boost defense and immigration enforcement funding, while implementing over $2 trillion in tax breaks and expanding the child tax credit. However, it also imposes work requirements on able-bodied adults without children, potentially leading to 7.6 million Americans losing their health insurance over the next decade, according to the Congressional Budget Office.

The Senate’s revision, released soon after the KFF poll, proposes deeper cuts to Medicaid and limited tax cuts to lower the overall cost of the package. Interestingly, while most Americans oppose the tax bill, there is broader support—around two-thirds—for Medicaid work requirements across party lines, with 88% of Republicans in favor.

Another poll from the Washington Post and Ipsos corroborates these findings, noting that only 23% of Americans support the House-passed bill, while 42% oppose it. The opinions reflect a significant partisan split, emphasizing ongoing divisions over economic policy under the Trump administration.
