Trump’s Nuclear Standoff with Iran: Urgent Meetings and Direct Call for Evacuation
By Aamer Madhani and Chris Megerian
Washington—In a dramatic shift, President Donald Trump has gone from viewing a nuclear agreement with Iran as "achievable" to urging the nation’s citizens to evacuate amid escalating tensions. Following significant Israeli missile strikes, Trump cut short his participation in the G7 summit to consult with his national security team in Washington.
Frustrated with Tehran’s lack of cooperation, Trump now demands a "complete give-up" of Iran’s nuclear ambitions, asserting, "IRAN CAN NOT HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON." While expressing a desire to avoid a direct military conflict, he has not ruled out potential diplomatic efforts, including delegating Vice President JD Vance and envoy Steve Witkoff to engage with Iranian officials.
Amidst this backdrop, speculation grows about the U.S. increasing its military involvement. Israel, having damaged Iran’s air defenses, aims to target critical facilities, but faces challenges in dismantling deeply buried sites like Fordo. With political divisions emerging among his supporters regarding U.S. intervention, Trump appears poised for a decisive U.S. role in the conflict, drawn between calls for restraint and those advocating for a strong stance against Iran.
