California Fugitive Captured 30 Years After Escaping FCI Dublin

Orleans Parish District Attorney Jason Williams is investigating the escape of 10 inmates from a New Orleans jail, delving into potential lapses in security and protocol. Meanwhile, Ronald Keith Harvey, a fugitive who escaped from a California prison over three decades ago, was arrested by the U.S. Marshals earlier this month in Nevada City, California. Harvey, 79, escaped from the Federal Correctional Institution in Dublin on January 21, 1994, while serving a five-year sentence for running a significant marijuana operation involving over 600 plants and firearms.

Deputy U.S. Marshal Cruz Moya, who has handled Harvey’s case since 2024, stated that the apprehension followed a data sweep leading to an updated address linked to Harvey. He highlighted that some individuals are more adept at evading law enforcement than others. Following his arrest, authorities indicated that Harvey still had about four years remaining on his original sentence, despite the lengthy duration of his flight from justice.

The Federal Correctional Institution in Dublin, where Harvey was incarcerated, gained infamy as the same facility where actresses Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin served time due to their involvement in the “Varsity Blues” college admissions scandal. The institution was closed in 2024 after allegations of sexual abuse came to light.

This juxtaposition of current inmate escapes in New Orleans and the historic capture of a long-term fugitive underscores ongoing concerns regarding prison security and governmental oversight in managing incarcerated populations.
