Jury Deliberations Continue in Karen Read Retrial
CANTON, MA – Jury deliberations in the retrial of Karen Read are set to resume Wednesday morning after a day filled with inquiries and discussions from jurors. The jury, which has been evaluating the case for approximately 16 hours over the past three days, sent four notes to Judge Beverly Cannone on Tuesday. Before the group’s adjournment, Judge Cannone acknowledged their hard work and dedication.
The jurors’ questions included clarifications regarding the verdict slip and the criteria that might lead to a hung jury. Read, 45, faces serious charges including second-degree murder, manslaughter while operating under the influence, and leaving the scene of an accident that resulted in injury or death. She is accused of using her Lexus SUV to collide with her boyfriend, Boston police officer John O’Keefe, outside the residence of another officer in Canton.
Throughout the trial, Read and her legal team have maintained her innocence, claiming she was framed and that O’Keefe suffered fatal injuries from an assault inside the home, rather than from her alleged actions.
Deliberations can extend as long as necessary for the jury to reach a unanimous verdict. As the courtroom anticipates the continuation of the process, the case remains a focal point of local attention, reflecting the complexities of justice entwined with personal narrative.
The jurors will reconvene around 9 a.m. Wednesday to continue their discussions and move toward a conclusion in this high-profile retrial.
