MassDOT Urges Drivers to Heed Traffic Warnings Ahead of Weekend Construction
Officials at the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) are hopeful that the public will heed traffic advisories as major construction resumes this weekend on the Newton-Weston I-90/I-95 Interchange. The first weekend of construction was successful, with many drivers avoiding the area, but concerns remain that compliance may wane during this second phase of work.
Starting Friday evening and lasting through Monday morning, the Mass Pike between Exit 123 in Weston and Exit 125 in Newton will be reduced to one lane in each direction for approximately 72 hours. This crucial project involves replacing the I-90 bridge over the MBTA Worcester Commuter Rail and is part of a broader initiative to upgrade eight bridges at the interchange.
MassDOT’s Jonathan Gulliver warned that traffic issues often arise during the second weekend of such projects, noting, “People tend to tune us out.” He stressed the importance of public cooperation to avoid significant delays, which could exceed three hours.
