Former Trooper Reflects on Karen Read Trial and Investigation
In a recent ABC interview, disgraced former Massachusetts State Trooper Michael Proctor discussed his involvement in the investigation of Karen Read, who was acquitted of murdering her boyfriend, Boston Police Officer John O’Keefe. Proctor, the lead investigator, faced scrutiny for both his conduct and the investigation’s integrity during Read’s trial.
Proctor defended his actions, expressing confidence in the case’s management, despite acknowledging potential areas for improvement, such as interviewing witnesses sooner. He categorically denied any conspiracy or evidence tampering, asserting that the investigation remained unbiased.
The trial revealed troubling text messages Proctor sent, including derogatory remarks about Read, which drew criticism and raised questions about his professionalism. He described these messages as "regrettable" but insisted they did not reflect a conspiracy. "I was caught up in the emotion," Proctor stated.
Following the trial, Read was convicted of operating under the influence and sentenced to probation. Meanwhile, Proctor faces a dishonorable discharge from the State Police due to his correspondence, a decision he is appealing.
The interview comes amid ongoing debates about police conduct and the integrity of the judicial process, echoing wider concerns in law enforcement.
