Will Rafael Devers Make His First Base Debut for the Giants Against the Red Sox This Weekend?

Matt Chapman Welcomes Rafael Devers to First Base as Giants Prepare for Series Against Red Sox

San Francisco – Five-time Gold Glove third baseman Matt Chapman expressed confidence in Rafael Devers’ transition to first base during a recent practice session. After just three days of intensive infield training, Chapman reassured Giants president of baseball operations, Buster Posey, that Devers will adapt well to his new position, stating, “He’s gonna be just fine over there.”

Devers, who had primarily played third base in his career, is undergoing a crash course in first base ahead of a three-game series against his former team, the Boston Red Sox. During practice, he has been working alongside former teammate Dom Smith, fielding grounders and executing essential footwork drills with guidance from coaches, including renowned instructor and former Gold Glover Matt Williams. Despite his impressive track record at third base, Devers is expected to take time to adjust to first base, with Giants manager Bob Melvin noting the nuances of the position that require acclimatization.

Devers is not expected to play in the field against the Red Sox this weekend, as Smith, with a solid .838 OPS, has been effective at first. Instead, Devers will likely serve as the designated hitter, similar to his role in recent games against the Cleveland Guardians.

As excitement builds ahead of the Red Sox series, which marks Devers’ first meeting with his former team since a messy departure, the Giants aim to manage expectations. Devers is set to hold a press conference before the game, highlighting the emotional stakes involved. "He’s been there a long time, so there’s probably going to be some emotions for him," Melvin remarked. The baseball world will be watching closely as Devers begins this new chapter in his career.
