Press Release
National Weather Service Issues Rip Current Warning for Southeastern Massachusetts
Bristol, Plymouth, and Barnstable counties are under a rip current statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) on Friday at 2:08 a.m., set to remain in effect until 7 p.m. The NWS warns beachgoers to be vigilant for "dangerous rip currents" at south-facing beaches, particularly impacting swimmers.
Rip currents pose significant threats, as they can quickly pull even the most experienced swimmers away from the safety of the shore. The NWS urges individuals to swim in areas monitored by lifeguards for added safety. In the event of getting caught in a rip current, swimmers should remain calm and float rather than attempting to swim directly against the current. If possible, it’s advised to swim parallel to the shore to escape the current’s grip. Should escape prove difficult, the NWS recommends facing the shore and signaling for help.
With the summer season in full swing, residents and visitors are reminded to prioritize safety and heed warnings from local authorities while enjoying the beautiful beaches of southeastern Massachusetts.
