Rafael Devers Addresses Trade to Giants: "The Past is in the Past"
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Rafael Devers spoke to the media on Friday, his first appearance since the Boston Red Sox traded him to the San Francisco Giants. Emphasizing "the past is in the past," Devers refrained from delving into specifics about his contentious exit from Boston, where he signed a 10-year, $313.5 million contract in 2023.
Devers highlighted his impressive statistics during his time in Boston, asserting he earned respect despite complications arising after the team signed Gold Glove third baseman Alex Bregman and requested he transition to designated hitter. When approached to fill in at first base after Triston Casas’s injury, he declined, prompting the Red Sox’s decision to trade him.
The Giants welcomed Devers, who has already made an impact with three hits in his first three games, and he is now working on playing first base. While reflecting on his transition, he expressed happiness and noted that seeing his former teammates brought him joy.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora acknowledged the trade’s awkwardness but viewed it as a business decision, indicating both sides are ready to move forward. Devers’s journey continues as he aims to boost the Giants’ lineup, which has notably lacked power since Barry Bonds’ era.
