The Woman Nurturing 98 Children with Disabilities in Uganda | Spotlight

Press Release

Title: A Beacon of Hope for Disabled Children in Uganda

On a humid November afternoon, Edith, 49, radiates warmth as she interacts playfully with her team at an orphanage dedicated to supporting children with disabilities. Amidst dodging puddles, the atmosphere pulsates with energy, amplified by upbeat pop music echoing through the courtyard. Highlights of the day include seven-year-old Diego, who has cerebral palsy, making his way up a ramp with Edith’s support.

Edith’s journey as a disability rights advocate was ignited by the birth of her son, Derrick, in 2000. After a misdiagnosis led to severe complications from meningitis, she faced a harrowing struggle to secure proper treatment, which ultimately resulted in Derrick being diagnosed with permanent disabilities. This experience was further complicated by societal stigma, as friends and family distanced themselves, labeling Derrick as “demon-possessed.”

For many Ugandans, misinformation about disabilities prevails due to the lack of education in government schools and local clinics, prompting reliance on traditional healing methods. Edith recalls trying various remedies from local witch doctors, all in vain, during desperate times.

The turning point came when her church community encouraged her to revisit the hospital. With their support, she returned, leading to a formal diagnosis that changed everything for her family. Now, Edith’s mission is twofold: providing a nurturing haven for children like Diego and advocating for awareness about disabilities in Uganda.

Today, the orphanage serves as a loving environment, embodying the essence of a family for its children, and highlighting Edith’s resilience and commitment to creating a more inclusive society. Her work continues to inspire hope and change, affirming the dignity of every child, regardless of their abilities.
