Press Release: Measles Outbreaks Return in the U.S. Amid Declining Vaccination Rates

June 14, 2025 — After being declared eradicated in 2000, measles is resurfacing in the United States, with the CDC reporting 1,197 confirmed cases across 35 states as of June 13, 2025. In just the current year, there have been 21 outbreaks, initiated by a significant event in Texas. Alarmingly, 95% of cases are among unvaccinated individuals, and the age distribution shows cases are spread evenly across different age groups.

Prior to the widespread use of the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine, the disease resulted in over 48,000 hospitalizations and 500 deaths annually in the U.S. The MMR vaccine is highly effective, providing 97% immunity against measles, yet vaccination rates in kindergarteners have dipped below the critical 95% threshold required for herd immunity.

The outbreaks are primarily linked to unvaccinated populations and are fueled by travelers returning from international trips. Recently, a traveler infected with measles visited various public spaces in Boston, raising concerns about potential exposure. The Massachusetts Department of Health has advised unvaccinated individuals who may have been exposed to monitor their health and avoid public places for 21 days.

Symptoms of measles typically appear within 7-14 days and may include fever, cough, and a distinctive rash. Serious complications such as pneumonia and encephalitis can occur in some cases.

Public health officials stress the importance of maintaining high vaccination rates and addressing vaccine hesitancy through educational efforts rooted in scientific evidence. Strengthening public trust in the health system is essential to prevent the resurgence of diseases once thought eradicated.

Juanita Carnes, a seasoned nurse practitioner and public health advocate, emphasizes the need for vigilance akin to maintaining an unweeded garden; nurturing community health is crucial for a healthier tomorrow.
