Massachusetts Lawmakers Condemn Trump’s Air Strikes on Iran
In the wake of President Donald Trump’s recent air strikes on Iranian nuclear sites, Massachusetts lawmakers have united in condemnation, asserting that the President violated constitutional mandates by failing to seek congressional approval before initiating military action.
U.S. Rep. Richard Neal criticized Trump’s approach on social media, stating, “Trump offered the American people no strategy and no justification for his attack on Iran — only the prospect of another war that the American people do not want.” He emphasized the necessity for Congress, as the voice of the public, to authorize any military action. Neal urged for a diplomatic resolution to the tensions with Iran.
U.S. Rep. James P. McGovern characterized the attack as "insane" and called for Congress to reconvene to vote on a War Powers Resolution proposed by Rep. Thomas Massie and Rep. Ro Khanna. This resolution aims to prevent U.S. military involvement without congressional consent.
Rep. Jake Auchincloss, a Marine veteran, insisted on the need for public debate regarding military actions and advocated for Iran to surrender its nuclear ambitions. He queried the legitimacy of the ongoing war authorities established in 2001 and 2002.
In a statement from the White House, Trump claimed the strikes had "obliterated" key Iranian facilities, asserting that the "bully of the Middle East" must make peace. Conversely, U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren labeled the strikes a "horrific war of choice," underscoring that only Congress has the authority to declare war. She implored for immediate legislative action to prevent further military escalation.
Congress members, including Reps. Katherine Clark and Ayanna Pressley, echoed these sentiments, asserting that Trump’s unilateral decision not only undermined constitutional law but also compromised the safety of U.S. servicemembers abroad. As tensions escalate, Massachusetts lawmakers are advocating for a critical re-examination of the powers regarding U.S. military action.
