Starfires Fall to Lake Monsters in Series Finale Despite Late Rally
BURLINGTON – The Westfield Starfires suffered a 4-2 loss to the Vermont Lake Monsters on Saturday night at Centennial Field, culminating their series with a disappointing record of 6-15. The Lake Monsters improved to 14-8, extending their winning streak to four games.
The matchup initially showcased a pitchers’ duel, with both teams struggling to generate runs in the early innings. Starfires infielder Ben Williams, a Boston College alum, impressively recorded three hits and his tenth stolen base of the season. The Starfires faced missed opportunities early on, failing to capitalize on base runners as Vermont’s defense, including a double play, thwarted their efforts.
The Lake Monsters took control in the fourth inning, with Cooper Berry hitting a two-run homer. They extended their lead to 4-0 by the eighth inning, bolstered by an impressive performance from Shaun McMillan. The Starfires rallied in the ninth, starting with Caleb Karll’s infield single. Jonathan Chatfield’s crucial double and Williams’s hit brought Westfield to within two runs, but they ultimately fell short.
Westfield will look to bounce back at home on Sunday against the Worcester Bravehearts during the third annual Westfield Starfires Summer Classic. The event includes a free youth clinic and live music, with the game commencing at 4 p.m.
