Jam Expert Critiques Meghan Markle’s New Apricot Spread
In a surprising critique, renowned jam expert Donna Collins has slammed Meghan Markle’s latest apricot spread under her As Ever lifestyle brand, calling it a “real disappointment.” Collins, who is the owner of The Jelly Queens and boasts over 40 world championships in jam-making, noted that the term “spread” is often used to describe a failed jam attempt.
Collins questioned the quality of the product, stating, “It can have the best ingredients, but if I had a jam that was too runny, I’d slap a label on it and call it a spread.” She expressed concern over Markle’s use of conventionally grown apricots, which may involve pesticides. Furthermore, Collins criticized the use of pectin, a gelling agent typically unnecessary in a proper jam, suggesting it indicated issues with consistency.
Although Markle’s apricot spread sold out within minutes of its release for $9, Collins speculated that this could be attributed to a limited batch rather than overwhelming demand. “I don’t know who’s making her spread, but we all know it’s not Meghan,” Collins stated, hinting at a lack of expertise behind the product.
The former “Suits” star announced her interest in homemade jams after launching her lifestyle brand last year. Besides the apricot spread, her product lineup included various items like herbal teas and crepes, all of which quickly sold out. Markle is reportedly exploring expansions into hotels and restaurants after sharing her passion for hosting in her Netflix series, "With Love, Meghan," which was renewed for a second season despite mixed reviews.
Markle’s team has yet to respond to Collins’ remarks.
