Over 200 Serious Injuries Linked to Illegal Fireworks in Massachusetts Over the Past Five Years

Massachusetts Fire Marshal’s Office Issues Fireworks Warning Ahead of July 4th

As the Fourth of July approaches, the Massachusetts Fire Marshal’s Office is urging residents to refrain from using illegal fireworks. Over the past five years, illegal fireworks have resulted in more than 200 serious injuries, over 500 fires, and nearly $1 million in damages statewide.

The weeks surrounding Independence Day see a spike in incidents involving illegal fireworks, drawing firefighters and paramedics away from vital emergencies, warns Massachusetts Fire Chiefs Association President Patrick Purcell. Under state law, police are required to confiscate any illegal fireworks, regardless of their origin, and possession or use can result in fines. Additionally, selling illegal fireworks leads to potential jail time.

State Fire Marshal Jon Davine stressed the inherent dangers, stating, "They are illegal without licensing and certification because they are so dangerous. Please don’t risk a fire, an injury, or a day in court—leave fireworks to the professionals."

For those looking to celebrate safely, the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services provides a continuously updated list of permitted fireworks displays throughout the summer. Visit their website for more information on legal options and the risks associated with illegal fireworks.
