Celtics Execute Major Offseason Trade: Offload Porzingis in Three-Team Deal
The Boston Celtics have made headlines once again, orchestrating their second significant trade of the offseason by sending Kristaps Porzingis to the Atlanta Hawks in a three-team deal. The trade, confirmed by ESPN’s Shams Charania, also involves the Brooklyn Nets, who will acquire Terance Mann and the Hawks’ No. 22 overall pick.
As part of the deal, the Celtics receive forward Georges Niang and a second-round pick. This strategic move to trade Porzingis comes swiftly on the heels of Boston’s recent decision to ship Jrue Holiday to the Portland Trail Blazers. Porzingis, long viewed as a trade candidate, is heading to Atlanta, which has been in search of a center to bolster their lineup ahead of the upcoming season.
The trade serves a dual purpose for the Celtics, not only optimizing their roster but also addressing financial considerations. By offloading Porzingis’ hefty $30 million contract, they significantly trim their payroll, reducing $22.5 million in salary commitments for the next season by bringing in Niang, whose contract is valued at $8.2 million. Consequently, the Celtics have successfully cleared themselves from the second apron by $4 million, bringing their total payroll commitments to $203 million.
Despite achieving substantial salary relief, the Celtics remain $16 million over the luxury tax threshold, leaving the door open for potential further moves aimed at mitigating their tax burden. As the offseason unfolds, all eyes will be on Boston’s next steps as they continue to refine their roster and financial strategy.
