Boston Celtics Trade Jrue Holiday to Portland Trail Blazers
June 24, 2025
The Boston Celtics are shaking up their championship roster as part of a retooling strategy, trading guard Jrue Holiday to the Portland Trail Blazers in exchange for Anfernee Simons and two future second-round draft picks. This move, first reported by ESPN’s Shams Charania, signifies the Celtics’ aim to alleviate salary pressures while also preparing for the impending season without star player Jayson Tatum, who is recovering from an Achilles injury.
Holiday, who played two seasons for Boston and helped secure the team’s 2024 championship, averaged 11.1 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 3.9 assists in the 2024-25 season. His defensive prowess and experienced leadership were pivotal in the Celtics’ playoff success. The trade allows Boston to reduce their payroll by $4.1 million and potentially avoid significant luxury tax penalties.
While Simons, on an expiring contract, averaged 19.3 points and 4.8 assists with the Blazers, it’s uncertain how he fits into Boston’s long-term plans. Celtics president Brad Stevens and management face a busy offseason as they aim to adjust their roster while maintaining championship aspirations.
