Kutter Crawford to Undergo Season-Ending Surgery After Off-Field Accident
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) – The Boston Red Sox faced another setback as manager Alex Cora announced that pitcher Kutter Crawford will require season-ending surgery on his right throwing wrist due to an off-field accident. Cora emphasized that the 29-year-old Crawford was not acting irresponsibly during the incident.
“It hasn’t been a great year for him,” Cora remarked. “It (stinks) that it happened this way, but it’s just an accident.” This injury follows Crawford’s ongoing struggles; he has been sidelined this season with a knee injury sustained early in 2024. In that previous season, Crawford showed resilience, recording a 9-6 record with a 4.36 ERA across 33 starts. He pitched a significant 183 ⅔ innings, racking up 175 strikeouts, although he gave up a league-high 34 home runs.
Initially optimistic, Crawford hoped to fully recover during the offseason after suffering from patellar tendon discomfort but faced a setback that prevented him from participating in spring training. As a result, he was placed on the 60-day injured list in March.
In addition to Crawford’s situation, Cora provided an update on star third baseman Alex Bregman, who has been out since May 23 due to a quadriceps injury. Although Bregman has been progressing in his recovery, he is expected to miss further time and likely won’t return until after the All-Star break. Before his injury, Bregman boasted impressive stats, hitting .299 with a .938 OPS, 11 home runs, and 35 RBIs across 51 games.
As the Red Sox look to navigate these unfortunate injuries, the depth of their rotation continues to be tested, leaving fans hopeful for the recovery of these key players.
