Red Sox Catcher Connor Wong Faces Challenges as Carlos Narváez Excels
BOSTON — Connor Wong entered the 2025 MLB season as the primary catcher for the Boston Red Sox, expecting to build on his successes from previous years. However, a fractured left pinky finger, sustained during a catcher’s interference play in early April, significantly altered his trajectory.
Before the injury, Wong started seven of the first 11 games. During his time on the injured list, newcomer Carlos Narváez seized the opportunity, emerging as the Red Sox’s primary catcher. While Wong was sidelined, Narváez started 18 of 22 games, proving himself as a top performer. Through 61 games this season, Narváez boasts a .268 batting average with six home runs and an impressive defensive record, positioning him as a potential All-Star candidate.
Wong’s return to the lineup has not gone as he hoped. Limited to just 55 plate appearances since May 2, he has only managed a .157 batting average with one RBI. His struggles come after a winter focused on improving his defensive skills, which have shown progress but not enough to reclaim his starting position.
Despite these challenges, Wong’s commitment to the team remains strong. Red Sox manager Alex Cora acknowledges the unanticipated shift in roles but emphasizes Wong’s importance to the team. Wong continues to support Narváez and the pitching staff, embodying the teamwork essential for success.
Both catchers are expected to share responsibilities moving forward, especially as the season heats up. Wong’s recent performance suggests there may be potential for a resurgence, with Cora noting the need for both catchers to play a significant role for the team to thrive this season.
